Meet Miss Alabama

Chandler Champion of Leeds was crowned Miss Alabama 2013 on Saturday, June 8th. Chandler attends the University of Alabama where she is majoring in dance and broadcast journalism, and is a graduate of the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham.  She is an accomplished dancer, having completed the Rockette summer intensive where she performed onstage at Radio City Music Hall, and taught an audition class for the Moscow Ballet.  Chandler is a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award gold medalist, which she earned by excelling in community service, physical fitness, and special skills, and by completing an adventurous journey which included repelling off a 65-foot cliff, and going zip-lining and night-time cave diving!

Chandler’s personal community service platform is “Chandler’s Challenge: Reading is Believing…Don’t Stop Believing” which encourages people to read every day.  She has worked with local libraries, organizations, and schools that understand the impact literacy has on our society.  Chandler spearheaded the remodeling of the library for Rushton School in Birmingham and was honored to have the new library named “The Chandler Champion Reading Center.”

Other accomplishments include playing the role of Tinker Bell for the Fairy Tale Ball benefiting the Child Care Resource Center, receiving a Resolution from the State of Alabama for academic, dance and leadership accomplishments, and serving as the keynote speaker for the Optimist Club Regional Convention covering Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.  She participated as a Vice President Ambassador and a Peer Helper, and volunteered for the Make a Difference Day efforts of both CMNH and the Child Care Resource Center as a team leader.  She served as a Heritage Panelist for Anti-Bullying, a Future Team Leader for Lead America, and a member of the Crimson Cabaret Dance Team.

Chandler sang onstage with the rock group Train, and loves scary movies, shoes, the Broadway musical Mama Mia!, and Starbucks.  She is the daughter of Shane and Debra Champion of Leeds, and has a younger sister named Zoe’.
